Dashboard warning lights

The colour already says a lot: red means stop, amber means have it checked soon, green and blue are information. Find your light below.

Red: stop safely as soon as possible

Oil pressure

The engine has too little oil pressure. Without oil it can be badly damaged within minutes.

What to do: Stop safely as soon as you can, switch off the engine and check the oil level. Don’t drive on if the light stays on.

Battery / charging

The battery is no longer being charged, usually because of the alternator or drive belt. The car runs on the battery until it is flat.

What to do: Switch off what you don’t need (heater, radio) and drive straight to a garage. Don’t switch the engine off on the way.

Brake system

Low brake fluid or a fault in the braking system. On some cars it also means the handbrake is still on.

What to do: Check that the handbrake is off. If the light stays on, don’t drive on and have the car checked.

Seat belt

Someone isn’t wearing their seat belt. If it stays on while everyone is buckled up, a buckle or seat sensor may be faulty.

What to do: Fasten your seat belt.

Amber: have it checked soon

Check engine

The engine computer has stored a fault, from a loose fuel cap to misfiring cylinders. If it flashes, it is serious.

What to do: Steady light: have the fault code read soon. Flashing: drive gently and stop as soon as you can.

Stability / traction control

Flashing while driving means the system is working on a slippery road: normal. Staying on means it is switched off or faulty.

What to do: If it stays on: check you didn’t switch it off yourself, otherwise have it checked.

Glow plugs (diesel)

Coming on briefly when you start is normal: the engine is preheating. Flashing or staying on while driving means an engine fault.

What to do: When starting, wait until it goes out. If it stays on or flashes, have the fault read.

Particulate filter (DPF)

The particulate filter is full and needs to regenerate, which usually happens on a longer drive at a steady speed.

What to do: Drive 20 minutes on the motorway. If it doesn’t go out, have it checked before the filter clogs.

AdBlue

The AdBlue level is low or there is a fault in the AdBlue system. If the tank runs empty, the engine may not restart after a set distance.

What to do: Top up the AdBlue. If the light stays on after topping up, have the system checked.

Key not detected / key battery

The car doesn’t recognise the key: often a flat key battery, sometimes a faulty key or antenna.

What to do: Replace the key battery or hold the key against the start button. Still not working? We can program or replace the key.

Have it checked: Smart Key / Proximity Key · €195 →

Immobilizer

The immobilizer doesn’t recognise the key and blocks starting. Possibly a faulty transponder or a key that isn’t (or no longer) programmed.

What to do: Try your spare key. If no key starts the car, we can program a new one.

Green and blue: for information

High beam

The high beams are on.

What to do: Dip your lights for oncoming traffic.

Low beam

The dipped headlights are on.

What to do: No action needed.

Front fog lights

The front fog lights are on.

What to do: Only use them in fog or heavy rain.

Cruise control

Cruise control is switched on.

What to do: No action needed.

Start-stop

The engine stopped automatically while standing still and restarts when you pull away. Crossed out or amber: the system isn’t working, often because of a weak battery.

What to do: No action needed. If start-stop never works any more, have the battery tested.
